Many kids grow up dreaming of someday being an Olympic champion. But what do Olympic champions want to be when they grow up? Well, in this day and age, if you’re Michael Phelps, you want to play poker. That’s right: Not excel at some other sport, not get some important job, not travel the world, not establish world peace, not date a different hottie every night. No. He wants to play poker. Which doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with the Human Dolphin, who today is probably the most recognisable athlete on the planet, thanks to his incredible performance in Beijing (eight gold medals, in case you were in a coma). It means he’s (a) smart, and (b) just like pretty much every other smart teen or 20-something in the civilised world. There is no doubt about it: This great game, which seemed to be on life support just ten years ago, is now the recreation of choice for a new generation of not just Americans, but of young, smart, tuned-in, competitive people everywhere. What does the athlete who has the world on a string think is cool? “I think it would be cool to play in the World Series of Poker,” he said recently. “And it would be cool to meet some of those poker guys.” What a brave new world we live in! The young man who could snap his fingers and get an audience with princes, presidents and Hollywood starlets wants to spend his time with poker legend Doyle Brunson and his son Todd, two overweight dudes with motel tans who spend most of their time staring at playing cards. Again, this doesn’t make Michael – who plays online – odd. It makes him normal for his generation, and intelligent. After all, he’ll probably learn more about life from Doyle than from any prince. Michael got his wish recently in Vegas, and had dinner with the boys. According to Doyle’s blog: “Michael said all he wanted to do in life was eat, swim and play poker.” Amen to that! Just make the swimming optional. John ‘Johnny Quads’ Wenzel Editor-in-Chief
