The story of the moment is, of course, the economic situation. The global economy has shrunk, at least temporarily, and that means a little less for just about everyone. Online, many poker players are lamenting that there are fewer fish and the games are tougher, but fortunately, the poker world is somewhat insulated from the recession in that poker is still expanding into new frontiers. There are untapped poker markets the world over that have never been explored, and when they are opened up, new players will flood the poker rooms – recession or no recession. We can see the beginnings of this in the new poker tours in Russia, Latin America, Australia/New Zealand and the Asia Pacific region. Poker is slowly making inroads in Eastern Europe with more and more countries either approving online poker, considering it or finally realizing that their state gaming monopolies are clearly contrary to European Union bylaws. This eastward growth will continue all the way to the Philippines. It’s just a matter of time. And in the U.S., a new administration is expected to be more poker-friendly. When you combine that with recent court decisions declaring poker a game of skill and stopping a state’s attempt to “seize” gaming website domain names, it’s easy to believe that the poker climate will definitely be improving across the pond. Recessions have been around as long as there have been “economies.” And they always turn around. Those who can hang in there and don’t think the sky has permanently fallen are those who will make the right decisions NOW. And those decisions will pay off big later on. There is money to be made. Check out our top ten player rankings on page 18 and our stats on page 16. Plenty of folks making money there. Our Pro of the Month (page 22) won two FTOPS events on the same day. Jonas Danielsson (page 48) didn’t have a clue about cards a few years ago, and now he’s signed with Ladbrokes and is crushing high-stakes games. Pick your spots wisely. Game selection is now more important than ever before. You do not have to stay in a borderline game – there are plenty to choose from. Keep your ego out of it – go where it’s easiest to make money, regardless of stakes, and take advantage of bonuses, freerolls and rakeback. Remember, for any game to be profitable, there have to be some “producers” at the table. If you don’t see any, don’t hang around just because you’re too lazy to leave or because you just want to play. Search for greener pastures – your bank account will love you for it. And you definitely want a nice bankroll in times like these. John ‘Johnny Quads’ Wenzel Editor-in-Chief
